  16. Installation
  17. ------------

  19. Copy all files from the release disk into a new directory (eg. KITHKIN) on
  20. your hard disk.
  21.  
  22. Run KITHKIN.EXE from the File Manager or create a new program item in the
  23. Program Manager and double click on the Kith and Kin icon.
  24. You can launch Kith and Kin from a Tree File (.TRE) if you have associated
  25. .TRE files with KITHKIN.EXE in the File Manager.
  26. The program (.EXE), help (.HLP) and options (.OPT) files must all reside in
  27. the same directory.

  29. To get you off to a flying start using Kith and Kin, read the help topic
  30. "Getting Started". This will lead you through the basics.
  31.  
  32. The file BWCC.DLL should reside in either the KITHKIN or WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  33. directories or in another directory in your PATH. Since it is a common DLL
  34. you may already have it on your system in which case you need only one copy
  35. available.

  42. Version 2.0 :

  44. Support for PAF GEDCOM files (the Genealogical Data Communication standard)
  45. is now included. You can export and import data to and from other genealogy
  46. programs. Simply specify that the file you wish to open is a GEDCOM file and
  47. Kith and Kin will do the rest. You can create a new tree or merge the GEDCOM
  48. file with an existing tree. Saving to a GEDCOM file is just as easy. Export
  49. one person, selected families or an entire tree.

  51. There are now indicators in Person and Family data dialogs to show if any
  52. notes or objects are present.

  54. The dialog fields and controls now have hot-keys to speed up keyboard use.
  55.  
  56. A new search facility has been added to check for people in limbo, ie.
  57. people who do not appear in families because they have no parents or
  58. marriages.

  60. Due to the length of time taken to load larger GEDCOM files, a status
  61. indicator bar is displayed each time any file type is opened or saved.
  62. Clicking on the Cancel button will abort the process.

  64. The placement of new family rectangles has been improved.

  66. The Select Dialog has been improved to handle larger trees.

  68. You can now scroll the tree area while moving or placing families. Simply
  69. move the cursor to the edge of window in the direction that you want to
  70. scroll. Hold down the CTRL key to move in larger jumps.

  72. You can also use the PageUp, PageDn, Home and cursor keys to scroll around
  73. the tree area.

  75. The tree area display has been enhanced.

  77. The current tree is not deleted when a File|Open fails.

  79. Some reports were becoming garbled when text was being printed beyond the
  80. edges of the page (eg. in ancestral trees). This version correctly clips all
  81. text at the set margins.

  83. The heading lines in the Family Details printout were missing from page 2
  84. onwards on some printers. This has now been fixed.

  86. A Person Details printout is now available for printing details of one or
  87. more people.

  89. The Descendant and Ancestral trees now have titles and have been improved to
  90. handle multi-page printing. Printers which can handle continuous stationery
  91. can produce large charts without having to join sheets.

  93. The Family Details printout now has improved widow/orphan control, eg. a
  94. page break was possible between the CHILDREN header and the first child.

  96. The Tree Layout print has been enhanced.

  98. The Index printout can now be sorted by either code or name.

  100. Appropriate menu items are now correctly disabled when there are no people
  101. and/or families in the current tree.

  103. The following are the limits on the size of the tree data. You can have up
  104. to 16383 people and families combined. The size of the Tree Area is approx.
  105. 200 families wide by 350 high. The maximum number of characters which can be
  106. held in each person or family notes is 9500. Ultimately the total amount of
  107. tree data will depend on the amount of memory (RAM) in your PC. To some
  108. extent the speed of your PC will govern the usability of the software with
  109. large amounts of data.

  115. This product is SHAREWARE. The version on this release disk is a fully
  116. functional evaluation copy which you may install and use free of charge
  117. for 30 days. After that time, if you wish to continue using the program you
  118. must become a registered user. Details of how to register are available in
  119. the on-line help.
  120. If you have been using an earlier version of Kith and Kin some of your tree
  121. (.TRE) and options (.OPT) files may require conversion before they can be
  122. used with this version. A data file conversion program is included with all
  123. registered versions of Kith and Kin.
